I am so glad to have literally stumbled on this site. I have always held the belief that innovative ideas and solutions lie in the minds of the majority without a platform to express them. I would love to become a part of some of the discussions and forums that seek to provide solutions to the fundemantal problems that South Africa is undergoing in areas such as basic education to corruption in government circles. My one question to you would be, what has this forum done to make the powers in the upper echelons of goverment, turn their heads and realize that there is a solution under their nose, to their ignorant implementation of many programs?

Kind regards
Chris

Ps: I am no academic or authority on any matter, I want a better country to inspire others in the SADC region.

Great article, thanks. Just realised that our boss is the Astronaut while my team and I are that pirates, no wonder we have all those challenges!

It really depends on who is driving the innovation, if the need comes from higher management, the funding comes from somewhere, even if there is no budget.

Really awesome article, and so so true!

I think most companies make all of these mistakes.

In addition to this, when it comes to funding Innovation. I personally think a company should set aside a percentage of their profit, or revenue for the more bold, for innovation. This sum should not be available able to be used to cross subsidise anything outside of the innovation space and the executives that don't use the funds should be penalised harshly as they are not looking to the future growth of the company.(The same should be done with the companies training budget.)Executive should also be measured on the long term goals(2 - 5 year). To many companies get run solely looking at Revenue/profits for the current financial year.

I especially like the profile of the "Pirate" I can see some of my self in that description. On a more serious note I agree that a disciplined approach is needed. It can sometimes sounds counter-intuitive to have structure around innovation, but some of the most successful case studies illustrate that a structured focus on innovation, including a strong focus on influencing the culture, can have a positive impact on an organizations innovation journey.

1. An experienced entrepreneur who is familiar with the product development and understands some of the technical detail (without a formal science background) can commercialise a scientific invention. Their role is to make the product a commercial success and the skills needed for commercialisation are valuable in transforming an invention into a commercial winner. A technical background is not a prerequisite but understanding all the in's and out's of commercialisation is. however, having a strong technical specialist on the team would be an advantage to the business enterprise.

2. Depending on the industry, market readiness, commercial niche, maket validation and due diligence you need to complete, the average time to market for a scientific invention is 4-7 years. In some commercial sectors it is quite feasible for a product to be in the market within 3-4 years.

I have an innovation to reduce power consumption in a new or existing household. The product is not in existence as yet but is in the development process. It can be fitted to new and existing homes.
