Ps: I am no academic or authority on any matter, I want a better country to inspire others in the SADC region.

It really depends on who is driving the innovation, if the need comes from higher management, the funding comes from somewhere, even if there is no budget.

I think most companies make all of these mistakes.

In addition to this, when it comes to funding Innovation. I personally think a company should set aside a percentage of their profit, or revenue for the more bold, for innovation. This sum should not be available able to be used to cross subsidise anything outside of the innovation space and the executives that don’t use the funds should be penalised harshly as they are not looking to the future growth of the company.(The same should be done with the companies training budget.)Executive should also be measured on the long term goals(2 – 5 year). To many companies get run solely looking at Revenue/profits for the current financial year.

2. Depending on the industry, market readiness, commercial niche, maket validation and due diligence you need to complete, the average time to market for a scientific invention is 4-7 years. In some commercial sectors it is quite feasible for a product to be in the market within 3-4 years.
