  1. Heinz says:

Could you please provide an indication of the number respondents. Also, regarding slide 5, the 100% marker should possibly be a 0% base, clarifying the data better. Is there statistical significance data for the results?

  2. Dear Heinz,

Have you recieved an answer regarding these questions? I will ask Dr Harry swart to answer you.

  3. Harry says:

Hi Heinz, there were 74 respondents to the Innovation Festival Dipstick out of the approximate 140 attendees (that is, a 43% response rate). The lenghth of the green and red bars together is 100% and the green / red balance determance how positive the responses were. If the entire line is green it means that all comments were positive and vice versa for an altogether red line. This diagram therefore allows one an overview (at a glance) of how positive (or negative) the responses to each question were.

As far as the query about statistical relevance is concerned, it is difficult to do a proper statistical significance test here because by definition most of the respondents are from different companies, and therefore the standard deviation (for example) will really only show the difference between the situations in these various companies.

However, it is interesting to note that the standard deviation for each of the 15 questions is in the range 27 to 33% (on the scale of 0 to 100%). That would indicate that with regards to each of the situations covered by the 15 generic questions, one can say that the 74 respondents have indicated that the actual situation varies by approximately the same amount in these companies. That in itself says something about the readiness to embrace innovation in South African companies.

I trust that your queries have been adequately answered. If not, please ask again – I will be more prompt in my reply next time around.

  4. Heinz says:

Thank you Harry for your response.

Why was there only a 43% response rate if 74 of 140 replied (53%) – were some of the responses invalid for whatever reason? 74 of 140 is a very good response rate if I consider similar “dipsticks” at other events.

I do understand how to interpret the split bar chart on slide 5. My remark was merely a question of taste.

I agree with you that a statistical significance test would not make sense given the spread of the sample.

The standard deviation for each of the 15 questions being between 27 and 33% is very consistent. It does say something about SA companies, but obviously remembering that the sample includes only those that attended the conference, i.e., those interested in innovation.

    Thanks again for your response.
